A GREAT WAY TO KICK OFF THE SEASON
119th Lilac Festival in Rochester, NY
3-Hour Narrated Erie Canal Cruise through Lock

May 16-18, 2017
Tuesday – Thursday
3 Days/2 Nights

Celebrating the abundance of beautiful, fragrant Lilacs in Rochester, NY has been a spring tradition since 1898, and over the years this annual event has grown into the largest tree festival in North America. The 119th Annual Lilac Festival showcases over 1200 bushes and over 500 different varieties throughout Highland Park that was designed by our very own landscape architect, Fredrick Law Olmstead.

The event is a photographer’s paradise with the explosion of purple blossoms that cover the hillside and pathways of the park. There are themed craft booths and food stalls to pamper every taste.

Our 3-day getaway will begin with a visit to the Susan B. Anthony House where guides will bring to life this amazing woman’s lifelong struggle to gain voting rights for women and equal rights for all. Although born in Adams, MA, the celebrated suffragette spent 40 of the most politically active years of her life in Rochester. It was here where she was arrested in 1872 for illegally voting and where she died in 1906 at the age of 86.

During our morning tour with a Local Guide, we’ll learn the history of this major port along the Erie Canal.  Giant grain elevators stored grain hauled from the mid-west via the Great Lakes awaiting transfer to barges. The mule-towed barges would then continue the journey down the Erie Canal to New York Harbor for shipment around the world. So much grain traveled through Rochester that it became famously known as “The Flour City” and Queen Victoria would only allow “Rochester Flour” used in the Royal Kitchens.

After our busy day, we’ll be ready to sit back and relax during a 3-hour afternoon narrated cruise on the Erie Canal passing by quaint canal towns and through a lock that is still used til this day.

We’ve planned a wonderful dinner in an historic inn along the banks of the Canal that was once used as a resting place for man and mule during their journey along the 363 mile waterway.

On our way home, we’ll stop for lunch (on own) with a little time to try your luck at Turning Stone Casino.
